Description
Dysphagia is a complex symptom that is intertwined on a wide range of disorders that can be acute, chronic and/or progressive diseases in nature. Making a differential diagnosis in challenging cases at the bedside and in the Radiology suite requires thorough knowledge of numerous medical disorders and their potential sequalae. A thorough review of the patients past medical history, environmental factors, home support, and prior level of function is an essential starting point. Appropriate interpretation of any past or current complex medical issues may contribute to the differential diagnosis and management of the case. The Speech Pathologist must be able to integrate evidence-based medicine, assess the quality of information provided collaborate with medical professionals to target physiological and/or structural issues identified during the clinical and Modified Barium Swallow.
Common patients with interesting twists will be presented. Each case represents challenging medical and/or cultural parameters. Information on differential diagnosis, medical issues, multidisciplinary management and instrumental evaluation findings will be discussed. Presentations will discuss evidenced-based treatment planning and patient-centered care. Audience interaction will be encouraged.
