Course Instructors

Laurie Wennerholm, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLT 

Laurie Wennerholm is a clinical specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders with over 26 years devoted to medical speech pathology. She has gained extensive experience in evaluating and treating speech-language, voice and swallowing impairments, with a specialization in head and neck cancer. 

Laurie received Specialty Certification in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders in 2006 and maintains her specialty recognition through leadership, education and scholarship. She is a Board Member of the American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Laurie also serves as an adjunct professor at New York University -- teaching the Dysphagia course at this institution. She has mentored and supervised many students completing clinical internships in medical speech pathology. 

Currently, she is employed at NYU Langone Health. Her focus is in evaluation and treatment of speech, voice and swallowing impairments in patients with head and neck cancers. Laurie is enthusiastic and passionate about her work and about eventually contributing to the body of literature that exists in dysphagia in the head and neck population. She is nearing completion of a PhD where her research aims to create a framework of care for individuals with laryngectomy. Her focus has always been the provision of evidenced-based, optimal care for the patient to maximize his/her/their quality of life.

Aaron Padilla, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S

Aaron Padilla is an acute care speech pathologist with Presbyterian Healthcare Services at Rust Medical Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He is a board certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders and enjoys bridging the gap between the research lab and clinical world through implementation science. He has been a member of the Swallow Disorders Research Lab in collaboration with Dr. Palmer, at the University of New Mexico since 2012. During this time projects have included: cultural considerations, swallow diagnostics and the development and implementation of the BOLUS framework, a multifaceted tool to assist in clinical decision making.

Description

Instrumental assessment is an integral component of the standard care in the evaluation and management of swallowing disorders. With a growing accessibility to instrumentation, clinicians may have the unique opportunity to develop a FEES program. This session will discuss historical and current evidence on the utility of FEES, as well as specifics including utilization of anesthetic, use of colorants, measures of swallow safety and efficiency and clinical decision making using a standard framework

Learning Outcomes

  1. Summarize the history of FEES as a critical tool in diagnosis and management of swallowing disorders.

  2. Identify the key components of a comprehensive FEES exam.

  3. Describe how to develop a FEES program based upon current evidence and best practice.

  4. Integrate information gleaned from FEES and apply the BOLUS framework to clinical decision-making scenarios.
